Renewables to Continue Driving US Power Generation Growth - EIA

According to its latest “Short-Term Energy Outlook” ...

https://www.eia.gov/outlooks/steo/ ,

... the EIA expects that US utilities and independent power producers will add 26 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity to the US electric power sector in 2025 and 22 GW in 2026.

-snip-

Generating capacity for most other energy sources will remain mostly unchanged in 2025 and 2026. Natural gas-fired capacity growth slowed in 2024, with only 1 GW of capacity added to the power mix, but natural gas is still the largest source of US power generation.

The EIA forecasts that US coal retirements will accelerate, removing 6% (11 GW) of coal generating capacity from the US electricity sector in 2025 and removing another 2% (4 GW) in 2026. Last year, coal retirements represented about 3 GW of electric power capacity removed from the power system, which is the lowest annual amount of coal capacity retired since 2011.

The EIA expects that planned renewable capacity additions will support most of the growth in US electric power generation, which is anticipated to increase by 2% in 2025 and by 1% in 2026. The US electric power sector produced a total of 4,155 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity in 2024, up 3% from 2023

Does anyone notice that none of his family...

...is (overtly) involved in these crimes?

He thinks HE'S covered by immunity, and he's letting his "richest man" rival do all the dirty work.

February 3, 2025

This is an extremely important video...

I'm re-posting this video for more widespread exposure because I strongly believe we all need to understand what is behind the current and future activities of the trump administration.

Once you've viewed this 30 minute, pre-inuaguration explanation of the plans we are now seeing put in action, you will begin to see why we must stop this administration (and the entire rightwing) immediately.

I also think that the understanding this video provides might help us to figure out ways to best counteract these efforts.

Musk associates given unfettered access to private data of government employees

Several of Elon Musk’s associates installed at the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) have received unprecedented access to federal human resources databases containing sensitive personal information for millions of federal employees. According to two members of OPM staff with direct knowledge, the Musk team running OPM has the ability to extract information from databases that store medical histories, personally identifiable information, workplace evaluations, and other private data. The staffers spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly and feared professional retaliation. Musk Watch also reviewed internal OPM correspondence confirming that expansive access to the database was provided to Musk associates.

USAJOBS, the federal government’s official hiring site, was one of the systems that Musk's associates were given access to. The database stores personal information — Social Security numbers, home addresses, employment records — provided by private individuals who have applied for federal jobs, regardless of whether the applicants went on to work for the government.

Musk’s aides were also given access to the OPM’s Enterprise Human Resources Integration (EHRI) system. Contained
within the EHRI are the Social Security numbers, dates of birth, salaries, home addresses, and job descriptions of all civil government workers, along with any disciplinary actions they have faced. “They’re looking through all the position descriptions… to remove folks,” one of the OPM staffers said of Musk’s team. “This is how they found all these DEI offices and had them removed — [by] reviewing position description level data.”

Other databases Musk’s team has access to include USA Staffing, an onboarding system; USA Performance, a job performance review site; and HI, which the government uses to manage employee health care. “The health insurance one scares me because it's HIPAA [protected] information, but they have access to all this stuff,” the OPM staffer noted.

There are rumblings of mass protests or nationwide economic boycotts...

...and there are also those who claim protests and boycotts don't work.

I'll agree there have been protests and boycotts that haven't worked in the past, but it should also be known that there have been those that HAVE worked.

It only takes 3.5% of a population to bring about substantial change...

The '3.5% rule': How a small minority can change the world -BBC

“There weren’t any campaigns that had failed after they had achieved 3.5% participation during a peak event,” says Chenoweth – a phenomenon she has called the “3.5% rule”. Besides the People Power movement, that included the Singing Revolution in Estonia in the late 1980s and the Rose Revolution in Georgia in the early 2003.

Something odd is happening when I open any reply on the "my posts" page....

When I look at the "my posts" page to see replies to my posts, and then click on any of my posts that have replies listed on them, the page that opens and usually has that particular post highlighted also has multiple random posts by others also highlighted.

The oddly highlighted posts are not in any order and don't seem to have anything in common, and they are not all mine.

Power Companies Pressure Trump EPA To Roll Back Rules On Toxic Coal Ash

By Kari Lydersen, 29 January 2025

A letter signed by executives from a dozen firms asks the EPA to let the companies off the hook for cleaning up scores of harmful coal-ash sites.

A coalition of U.S. power companies is demanding “immediate action” from the Trump administration to roll back federal regulation of toxic coal ash and rescind recent enforcement actions.

A Jan. 15 letter to Lee Zeldin, President Donald Trump’s nominee to head the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, outlines specific steps the federal government should take to relieve power companies of their obligations to prevent coal ash from contaminating groundwater. The letter, which was obtained by Canary Media and has not previously been reported on, is signed by executives representing a dozen power-plant operators that collectively hold over half a billion cubic yards of the dangerous material, a byproduct of burning coal in power plants.

“These are powerful corporations asking for the administration to do their bidding even if those actions put health and the environment at risk, which they certainly will,” said Lisa Evans, senior attorney for Earthjustice, which compiled groundwater monitoring data in 2022 revealing the scope of coal-ash pollution that will remain in the U.S. even after a transition to clean electricity.

-snip-

The vast majority of coal-ash sites nationwide are contaminating groundwater, companies’ own data shows. Duke Energy has excavated ash from a number of sites in North Carolina, following criminal charges related to the 2014 Dan River spill. Talen’s coal ash in Montana is putting the Northern Cheyenne Tribe at risk. American Electric Power, former owner of the Gavin plant, bought out the entire town of Cheshire, Ohio, because of pollution from the plant.

Is it okay to discuss here what is NOT the way forward?

I appreciate that this forum has somewhat relaxed rules to encourage serious discussion on the essential questions of how we, as Democrats, must try to grab the wheel and turn this nation back onto a sane course.

Does that include being able to speak freely about what Democrats should obviously not be doing?

I hope so, because here goes...

These past weeks, Dems across the country (and not just here on DU) have been doing all they can to amplify the message that we must form a strong, united front against the work trump and his people are doing to crush our Democracy and actually de-legitimize our Constitution.

Even before they began nabbing people of color off the streets and filling detention camps with them, some of us were trying to shed light on the statements of some elected Democrats who were sending counter-messaging that this nazi-based regime might be "worked with" in some way, that what they are doing, and what they are telling us they are planning to do, might be acceptable in some way. We responded as loudly as we could against the "yes" votes that were trickling in from Democratic Senators for the very nominees trump will entrust to bring down our governmental institutions.

With some hope, there was backlash, even the corporate media allowed aired segments to show how the will of the sane half of America was calling for resistance, opposition, and unity on the left. A handful of elected officials brought even more attention to the need for steady defiance in the face of "shock and awe" actions of this Administration.

And yet, after watching the devastation unfolding for weeks, today we wake up to this:

"Senate confirms Doug Burgum as interior secretary after Trump tasked him to boost drilling"

The vote was 79-18. More than half of Senate Democrats joined all 53 Republicans in voting for Burgum.

We can not be normalizing trump's work.

We can not be sending the message to the public that any of his ideas, desires, or actions are acceptable.

We can not be pretending that any of this is "business as usual", because we know it isn't.

We can not become complicit in the undeniable (and undenied ) attempts to dismantle our Democracy.

...and yet that is EXACTLY what some elected Dems are doing every day this crucial week by accepting and agreeing with the people trump is putting in positions of power, authority, and control.

How deep exactly is the rot of America?

We must face hard realities right now.

Will what Democrats see in the mirror be one of the hardest to face?

Will we discover that WE are actually one of the most destructive realities, smoothing the way forward toward the end our 250 year old American Democracy?

WE CAN NOT continue to assist the current fascist regime to annihilate our Democracy.
